Skiing the Southern Alps for Earthquake Revovery
Follow My Journey: Pt 6
Returning to Life on My Own
Septembert 17th: Broken River
The day after Kyle and TJ left, I of course took advantage of the opportunity to go skiing up at Broken River with my friend Sebastian, who I had not yet had the chance to go skiing yet. I was also really excited to ski at Broken River because I had seen a video on youtube where you get into this tram and press a button to send it up the mountain to the ticket office and lodging.
We headed out early that morning with the intention to ski Porters. However, we arrived at Porters to find that the access gate was closed and were then informed that the mountain would be closed for the day due to avalanche risk. It was pretty annoying since we were one of the first car's there, but we turned around and headed back towards 73. Just before the intersection, we used our phones to figure out other mountains that were open, and to my excitement, we found out Broken River was open and we headed over there. The access road to BR was much different then the roads to all the other mountains as it was heavily forested. We trekked on up to the parking lot in Sebastians subaru, and then had a slight fail since we made it all the way up without chains, but then got stuck in the parking lot. We got out and put on chains, and then parked our car. The small parking lot was extremely crowded that day (by crowded I mean really crowded for a club field). The parking lot was pretty full and people were talking about parking right behind people and leaving their car unlocked with their keys inside and a note saying that their car can be moved if someone needs to get out. You gotta love New Zealand.
Also, there were a few keas going at it right away in the parking lot, which is always a great sight. I got some quality footage of a pair of keas ripping apart a car.
We waited in line for a decent amount of time and eventually got on the tram. I could see right away how the tram seemed a bit sketchy, but I wasn't nervous. I pushed the button with exitement and we made our way up the mountain.

We got off at the top of the Tram, bought our tickets, and grabbed nutcracker tows and belts. From the ticket office, we hiked up past the lodges (stopping to adjust the bindings on Sebastians skis I was borrowing to fit my boots) and up towards the first tow. The views of the mountains and plains after emerging from the tree line on the hike up were breathtaking.

Bottom Tow
We took the bottom tow up to the lodge where we stopped real quick before hitting the slopes. The snow was a bit choppy, but there was good coverage and we were really excited about that because of the recent weather. Sebastians skis were really long so I had a hard time getting used to them in the rough snow, and my feet were in a lot of pain by the end of the day. We hit some good runs from the top of nervous knob, and found some good snow when we did a run in Allan's Basin. There was also really soft pillows right by the bottom tow and we did several laps of those. The lodge atmosphere was really chill. We ate lunch and had some beer on the front porch and I was entertained by the keas the entire time. The place was full of keas and I was sure to get a ton of pictures and videos.

Septembert 20-21: Port Hills
Our TEPE class had our first overnight field trip in the Port Hills. I missed out on formal weekend up at Temple Basin, but at least I was able to see the Port Hills, which besides the hike with Andrew and Gordy earlier, I hadn't seen any of. We hiked around Lyttelton Harbour and Governors Bay, camping for the night at the Sign of the Bellbird.

Septembert 28th: Porters
Sebastian and I decided to get some nice Sunday spring skiing in at Porters, and I was able to get a free ticket with his chill pass. It was a nice bluebird day and perfect t-shirt weather in the afternoon. We did a bunch of laps on the main groomers and had a great time. It was also nice using the t-bars instead of rope tows.
